She had been sitting on the floor at home marking school papers, with her children around her. A huge crowd at the funeral was testament to the enormous impact she had on her community.
JOHN MARSHALL
John Marshall, a 1996 graduate of New Mexico Tech and longtime lab associate in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, passed away on June 22, 2007 at his home in Socorro, New Mexico, after a brief battle with an aggressive form of cancer.
A memorial service was held August 4, at 1 p.m., Family Christian Center, Socorro.
John was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on August 20, 1949, to Beth and Joe Marshall. He graduated from James Caldwell High School in West Caldwell, NJ in 1967. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1968 to 1972, serving a tour in Vietnam.
In 1982 he met Elena Terrell, who became his wife, and they decided to move west to become cowboys. They changed their names from John and Elena to Cody and Buster because it sounded more western. From 1982 to 1991 they worked on ranches and in dude stables, traveling by horseback through Arizona and New Mexico. They would work wherever they could get room and board. For several years they lived off and on at Bingham, at the Old Long Ranch owned by Gabby Hayes.
In 1991 they had a son, also named Cody. John decided to go back to college to provide more stability for his son, and he chose New Mexico Tech. After graduation he continued to work at Tech and taught several engineering drawing courses over the years, influencing many students. Don Weinkauf, chair of the Chemical Engineering program, recalled him as an “invaluable member of our team, who would jump in to help on any occasion. He developed highly advanced data acquisition and instrumentation skills, virtually self-taught. He laid the foundation of our philosophy to involve students in every aspect of lab construction.”
